A ratio that lets you open a position far larger than your balance.

1:100 means each dollar in the account opens a hundred dollars in the market. Leverage does not increase your profit or loss by itself - the size it lets you open does. Higher leverage means less margin per lot, and therefore a stronger temptation to open a size the balance cannot survive.
